One day like this in 1905, Greta Garbo was born in Stockholm, Sweden. She grew up in a working class family, as the little girl. Her first job, as a clerk, at the major Swedish departament stores PUB, gave her an opportunity to make a couple of shorts for the store in 1920. The next step was her first role in the comedy 'Peter the Tramp' in 1922. Later that year she won a full scholarship to the prestigious Academy of the Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm.
Greta Garbo had a tirelessly film career, she perfomanced in 28 movies from 1922 to 1931, she was a well-known actress, that's why she won four Academy Awards Oscar nominations for her best performance. The icing on the cake, was in 1954, because she received Academy Award Oscar for her 'Unforgettable Performances'.H
Her beauty didn't go unnoticed, she seduced the heart of millions with her great charm...and this wasn't the only thing, in 1954, Guinness World Record named her 'the most beautiful woman that ever lived'. In Spanish, we don't have the famous expressions like 'Pulling a Garbo' or 'Going Garbo' (Her refusal to give interviews gave rise to press reporters these expressions), we use her surname 'Garbo' to describe a woman who has a stunning way of walking, brimming with elegance. Garbo means, grace in English. Also, Fortune smiled on her, because in the 1930's she was one of the highest paid women in United States.
She was the first woman to be viewed as both assertive and feminine. It's pretty funny, because in the next picture, I've just discovered it, she reminds me of my mum!!! :O I didn't realize before! What a pity! I don't have a relative's photo album, right now, here in Dublin, to show you some pics! :(
Another pic of my 'mummy' he,he .I'm really surprised!:O
The title of the post is 'Garbo laughs' because she was known as 'The Swedish Sphinx', due to her serious face...but she guffawed in the comedy film 'Ninotchka'. This shot went up like a torch, and it appeared in thousand of newspapers, with the headline 'Garbo laughs!'. It was so popular than it reads on its promotional movie poster.
I'm gonna watch your movie Ninotchka right now!!!
